Music Therapy

Woolwich Counselling Centre is offering Music Therapy with Melissa Jessop, Registered Psychotherapist (RP), Master of Music Therapy (MMT), and Certified Music Therapist (MTA) with the Canadian Association of Music Therapists.

Using music intentionally within therapeutic relationships can support development, health, and well-being.

Music can be a safe space to start a journey of creative exploration towards wellness through listening, improvising, songwriting, singing, moving, and re-connecting with instruments. Music can be the catalyst for change, and it can be fun!

About Music Therapy

Frequently Asked Questions:

1. What types of music or instruments do you find most effective in your therapy sessions?

Melissa: Music preferences are so personal that it is impossible to say what music is best or most effective because it differs from one person to the next. The various elements of music can uplift or reflect the quiet and vulnerable aspects of a person’s experience. I offer a wide variety of instruments including drums and hand percussion to tap into a non-verbal, creative and expressive medium.

2. How do you assess a client’s progress in music therapy?

Melissa: Much of my evaluation is collaborative whenever possible. Personal growth and progress can be measured together. We will co-create person-centred goals to work toward in music therapy.

3. How do you incorporate a client’s preferences or cultural background into therapy?

Melissa: This is imperative and a first critical step in our work together. Cultural considerations and personal musical preferences must be prioritized so that our work together can be effective.

For Clients Seeking Music Therapy

Frequently Asked Questions:

1. What are some of the common conditions or challenges that music therapy can help with?

Melissa: Music therapy can be a wonderful approach across the lifespan. I have specialized using music therapy with adults with complex mental health needs, older adults with Alzheimer-type dementias, and palliative care. Music therapy is also widely used with children and teens with anxiety, low self-esteem, and depression.

2. How long does a typical music therapy session last, and how often do clients attend?

Melissa: Typically, sessions can last between 30-60 minutes in length depending upon age and session plan.

3. Does a music therapist only work with musical elements?

Melissa: While music therapy primarily uses music as a tool for processing and healing, it is often combined with other therapeutic means, including talk therapy, for a more holistic approach to well-being and growth.

4. Can someone with no musical experience benefit from music therapy, or do you need to have a musical background?

Melissa: No musical training is necessary, and music therapy should not be confused with music lessons. Music therapy can be an alternative when other traditional supports/counselling have been less effective.

5. Are there specific ages/specific issues where music therapy is more helpful?

Melissa: Music therapy can be an effective support and intervention from birth through to the end of life, and for creative persons and artists who might find music therapy helpful to meet their creative needs.
